What I tell my clients is that the closer you can identify what you do in your name, the better.
Example: My company is called “Construction Market Consultants, Inc.” Because that is what we do, we do marketing and business development consulting for companies within the construction industry.
Avoid Acronyms if possible. Yes, people pretty much know about IBM, UPS and AT&T but if you choose to name your software comany after your initials, then that tells people nothing.
Avoid cute spellings. You want people to find you and since you are going to be in the software business, you are going to be dealing with people who are computer savvy. If they want to find you via a search engine and spell “Quick” like this, “Kwik”, it may take a while before they can locate you.
Finally, make sure you check the corporation database in your state to make sure the name you choose is not already taken. I have worked with people who a lot of money on letterhead, business cards, etc. to find out the name they chose was not unique.
